As a player, Buehrle was a five-time MLB All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove winner. He was the White Sox’s ace for the better part of the 2000s, including for the 2005 World Series Champions.
Buehrle spent 12 seasons with the White Sox, finishing fifth in the AL Cy Young voting in the 2005 season. He threw a no-hitter in 2006 and followed that with his iconic perfect game in 2009 where Dwayne Wise’s immaculate center field catch robbed Tampa Bay of a home run that would’ve broken up the perfect game.
Buehrle is also remembered for recording a save in Game 3 of the 2005 World Series, where he came into the game after Geoff Blum’s go-ahead home run in the 14th inning. Later, Buehrle would admit he had a few … adult beverages in the dug out during that elongated game.
“Yes, I did have a few beverages on the bench, and I went up to Cooper in the sixth, seventh or eighth inning. I don’t remember what it was,” Buehrle said, according to MLB.com. “They were starting to use the bullpen. This guy came in for a third of an inning and this guy came in for a third, so it was getting thinner and thinner there.”
Before he knew it, it was his time.
“I’m like, ‘Will you need me?’ and Coop said, ‘No.’ So I go get another beer,” Buehrle said. “I did that a few times, and it was like, when he said, ‘Yeah, get [your] crap on,’ I thought he was just saying it because he was sick of me asking him. I got ready and went down there.”
When White Sox fans think of Buehrle’s career, which included 524 appearances, they’ll think of moments like those, as well as his no-hitters, and the wins he brought to a franchise that desperately wants to find a pitcher who can deliver the same in 2025.
