Contreras, 25, went 2-4 with two saves and a 4.35 ERA (68.1IP, 63H, 36R/33ER, 31BB, 56K, 11HR) in 49 combined appearances (three starts) with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Angels in 2024. He began the season with Pittsburgh, going 1-0 with a 4.41 ERA (16.1IP, 19H, 8R/ER, 8BB, 16K, 3HR) in 12 relief outings. Contreras was acquired by the Angels in exchange for cash considerations on May 16, going 1-4 with two saves and a 4.33 ERA (52.0IP, 44H, 28R/25ER, 23BB, 40K, 8HR) in 37 games (three starts) with the Angels.
Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2021-24) and Los Angeles Angels (2024), the right-handed pitcher has gone 10-16 with three saves and a 4.72 ERA (234.2IP, 223H, 131R/123ER, 103BB, 201K, 35HR) in 90 career appearances (33 starts).
Contreras has spent parts of six Minor League seasons in the Yankees (2017-19) and Pirates organizations (2021-23), going 20-14 with a 3.28 ERA (376.1IP, 307H, 164R/137ER, 111BB, 367K, 36HR) in 81 games (76 starts). He was rated by Baseball America as the top Dominican pitching prospect for the 2016 international signing period.
The Yamasa, D.R., native was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2016. He was acquired by Pittsburgh from the Yankees along with INF Maikol Escotto, OF Canaan Smith and RHP Miguel Yajure in exchange for RHP Jameson Taillon on January 24, 2021. He was then designated for assignment on May 11, 2024 and acquired by the Angels in exchange for cash considerations on May 16, 2024. Additionally, he was claimed off waivers by three different teams this offseason (Texas, Cincinnati and Baltimore).
