Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive line coach and passing game coordinator Kacy Rodgers is set to become the Detroit Lions defensive line coach, a league source confirms.
Rodgers, 55, had previously interviewed with the Packers for the same vacancy on Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff. Now, instead, Green Bay will be facing off against Rodgers twice each season in the NFC North.
News of Rodgers’ hiring was first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Widely viewed as a rising star in the coaching community, Rodgers spent the past six seasons in Tampa Bay following a three-year stint as the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator.
This past season, the Buccaneers held opponents to a meager 97.8 rushing yards per game, as the league’s fourth-rated defense against the run.
In Detroit, Rodgers replaces Terrell Williams who left the Lions to become the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator, and brings with him a wealth of experience both as a position coach and from his time as a coordinator.
The Packers, though, will need to look elsewhere to fill their vacancy.
