Most in Pittsburgh remained certain that either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields would be the starting quarterback of the Steelers next season. Those are two safe bets, but many within the fanbase have gone to war over which of the two pending free agents deserves the job. Fields and Wilson need a contract extension if the Steelers want to retain either of them or return as a starting option.
Speculation remains circling the organization, which has continued to fail in the playoffs over the past eight years and could look for outside options. The Black and Gold are in a tough spot since they don’t have many viable choices to pick from this offseason. Unless a quality player becomes available on the trade market, it is unlikely they could find an upgrade over Wilson or Fields.
Bleacher Report published an article that will have Steelers fans heated.
They have written a mock trade article proposing different destinations and mock deals for Kirk Cousins. He just signed a massive contract in free agency of 2024 and got benched only 15 weeks into his Falcons tenure. Pile on the fact that he will be 37 years old by the start of the season, and he spells disaster. Acquiring Cousins would only provide a sense of deja vu to fans.
Steelers’ fans would be furious going from Russell Wilson to Kirk Cousins
Imagine this trade hitting your news feed randomly during the football offseason. It would create more displeasure than the Steeler’s latest playoff loss, and that is going off of Pittsburgh nearly leading a revolt against the team. Adding Cousins would not provide much, and some might even say they would be downgrading from their current quarterback conundrum.
When you break things down, Wilson compiled a better stat line this past year compared to Cousins. He totaled over 2,400 passing yards in 11 starts compared to Cousins’s 3,508 yards through 14 games. Although the Falcon’s signal caller was better in that department, their touchdown-interception ratios were poles apart. Wilson held numbers of 16-5, while Cousins produced a putrid 18-16.
Looking over the mock trade, it isn’t too ugly-looking on the surface.
Pittsburgh lands a veteran quarterback who is under contract for a while. He has shown that he can win games for you and potentially land you the postseason success that the Steelers have been begging for. They also subtract a cap problem with Preston Smith. So, in essence, The Black and Gold take on a more dramatic contract issue to ensure their quarterback position.
Adding someone like Cousins via trade for one cap dumb for another is just poor business. If this mock deal became reality, then the Steelers messed up the quarterback situation in the offseason. While the veteran quarterback has won in the playoffs before, he still holds a poor record of 1-4. Adding someone like him would create financial stress and the same results in the postseason.
