BREAKING: White Sox send ace pitcher to Red Sox for prospect haul

Garrett Crochet traded to Red Sox

CHICAGO – After months of rumors, the Chicago White Sox are reportedly trading their ace pitcher to the East Coast.

According to multiple reports, the Sox are sending ace Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox for a massive prospect haul, including Boston’s top prospect catcher Kyle Teel.

The White Sox officially announced the trade Wednesday afternoon.

In the 2024 season, Crochet had a 6-12 record, a 3.58 ERA, 209 strikeouts and a 1.07 WHIP ratio. He was named AL Comeback Player of the Year after his stellar season as an ace, following a complete return from Tommy John surgery.

According to MLB.com, the White Sox will receive catcher Kyle Teel , outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-handed pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez.

Teel and Montgomery were rated as MLB Pipeline’s No. 25 and No. 54 overall prospects, respectively.

This is the second time the White Sox have traded an ace to Boston as part of a massive rebuild. The White Sox sent Chris Sale to Boston in 2016 for for Yoán Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Víctor Díaz.

The White Sox most recently traded Kopech to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won the 2024 World Series, and declined Moncada’s team option, which makes him a free agent. Basabe played for the White Sox in two stints before the team released him in May 2022. Diaz never appeared in a game for the White Sox.

Teel is the prized prospect the White Sox get in this haul. Teel, a Unviersity of Virginia Alum, batted .288 with 13 home runs, 123 hits and 78 RBI between stints at the AA and AAA levels in Boston’s farm system.

As of last week, the Crochet sweepstakes were rumored to have included the Cubs, Padres, Yankees, Red Sox and Reds. For a second time, Boston won the sweepstakes and will add Crochet to a pitching rotation that includes Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford.
